Caption: Fluorescent light micrograph of the germination of pollen grains on the stigma of Lycopersicon esculentum, a tomato plant. The pollen grain (yellow oval) produces a pollen tube (long yellow filament), which, as it grows, carries the male gametes (sperm) down the style toward the ovaries at the base of the flower. The tip of the tube bursts open & releases the gametes to fertilise the ovum (egg). Successful fertilisation insures the next generation of seeds.
