Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains (oval pitted structures) germinating on the stigma of the sweet alysseum flower (family: Cruciferae). The stigma is the pollen receiving structure which, together with the ovary, forms the female reproductive organ; in this case it consists of ridges of finger-like projections. During germination the grains swell, & the furrows visible along one side split to allow the pollen tube to emerge. This tube grows into the stigma, down the style & into the ovary, carrying the male gamete from the pollen grain to fuse with the female ovum contained within the ovary.
