Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph of pollen grains on the stigma of the sweet alyssum flower. The stigma, the female, pollen-receiving structure consists of numerous finger-like projections in this species (coloured red and light green). After germination, the oval pollen grain (dark green) splits along its central furrow to accommodate an emerging pollen tube. The pollen tube grows down the style (which supports the stigma) and into the ovaries at the base of the capsule, where it releases the sperm (the male gametes) for fertilization with the eggs (ova). Seed production follows. Magnification: X 200 at 35mm size.
