Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains on the stigma of the sweet alyssum flower. The stigma, the female pollen-receiving structure is covered by numerous finger-like projections (papillae). After germination, the oval pollen grain splits along its central furrow to accommodate an emerging pollen tube. The pollen tube grows down the style (which supports the stigma) and into the ovaries at the base of the capsule, where it releases the male gametes for fertilization with the eggs (ova). Seed production follows. Magnification: X 570 at 35mm size. Original is bw print b786/182.
