Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of two pollen grains of Borage, Borago officinalis. It's outer wall (exine) has a wart-like ornamentation with germinal furrows lining part of the surface. When the pollen grain, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma of a flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out from the furrow, down this the nuclei will travel towards the ovaries, the ovules are then fertilised and a seed is formed. Magnification: x3900 (at 10x8 size).
