Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph of a pollen grain of a Pine tree Pinus sp.. The pollen grain has two air filled bladders joined onto a coarse granular structure. The air bladders make the pollen grain more buoyant so that it can be dispersed over greater distances by the wind. The pollen grain contains the male gametes which, after dispersal, may settle on the stigma of the appropriate plant & germinate. A pollen tube grows out of the grain down to the ovary. The male nuclei are carried down the tube, fertilize the ovules & a seed is formed. Magnification: X429 at 35mm size.
