Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph of oblong box-shaped pollen grains of Lungwort, Pulmonaria officinalis. It's outer wall (exine) has a perforated texture and germinal furrows cover part of the surface. When the pollen grain, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma of a flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out from the furrow, down this the nuclei will travel towards the ovaries, the ovules are then fertilised and a seed is formed. Magnification: X321 at 35mm size.
