Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mature, pollen-bearing anther of Shepherd's Purse, Capsella bursa-pastoris. The anther f develops as a closed chamber, & at maturity consists of 2 closed pollen sacs. In this micrograph, the rough- textured surfaces are the outside of the anther wall; the smoother surface at centre is the anther's inside wall, made visible when the anther split open to let the pollen escape - a process called dehiscence. Some pollen grains are still visible inside the open pollen sac. Magnification: x65 at 35mm size. Green tint ("leech"). Original is BW B786/57M. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 4.29, page 81.
