Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain from a flowering pear tree, Pyrus communis, showing the "furrows" along its sides through which a pollen tube emerges at the time of germination - the passage of the male nuclei down the tube that has grown down the female reproductive structures; through the stigma, down the style and into the ovary. Germination of pollen grains does not only occur on the stigma of a related plant but has been observed in nectar and on the surfaces of petals. Magnification: x800 at 35mm size.
