Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from a flowering horse chestnut tree, Aesculus hippocastanum, showing the single "furrow" along the length of each grain, through which the pollen tube emerges at the time of germination. Germination appears to be imminent in these pollen grains, with the emergent pollen tube coloured green. The pollen tube conducts the male nuclei down the flower's female reproductive structures prior to fertilisation - through the stigma, down the style and into the ovary. Magnification: x330 at 35mm size.
