Caption: Grass pollen. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a cluster of grass pollen grains. This pollen shows the distinctive rounded shape and sculpted protein coat of one member of the grass family (Gramineae). Pollen grains are produced by the male sex organs in plants. In grasses they are produced in enormous quantities and dispersed by wind to the female sex organs, where the egg is fertilised. One consequence of the abundance of grass pollen during the flowering season is hay fever, an allergic reaction in humans to the highly variable proteins of the pollen coat. Magnification x430 at 35mm size.
