Caption: Violet pollen. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a cluster of pollen grains of violet (Viola). The pollen grains show the distinctive oval shape and grooved, pitted surface of a member of this genus. Pollen grains are produced by the male sex organs in flowers. In violets they are carried to the female sex organ by insect pollinators, where the egg is fertilised. Magnification x220 at 35mm size.
