Caption: A worker honey-bee, Apis mellifera, collecting pollen from a flower. The worker supplies the colony with food, guards the nest, builds & cleans the comb and cares for the young. A strict division of labour based on age exists among worker bees. After an initial period acting as a janitor, cleaning the comb, the young worker moves onto caring for the young. Later its wax glands begin to function and the bee is assigned to construction. After 20 days the bee begins to forage for food, performing the invaluable service to plants of pollination.
