Caption: Sagittarius the Archer, ninth of the twelve constellations or signs of the Zodiac. The traditional figure of the archer as a centaur is superimposed on a photograph in which the constellation stars have been enhanced. The centaur was a favourite creature of the Assyrians, & it seems probable that the constellation figure originated in ancient Assyria or Babylon, since it was already well known by the time of the Greeks. The arrow in Sagittarius' bow is aimed directly at Antares, the heart of Scorpius. The Sun is in Sagittarius from 22 November to 21 December.
