Caption: Electrical conductivity. Light bulb and ammeter (far left) showing the electrical conductivity of a solution of sodium chloride in water. Sodium chloride (table salt) dissolves in water and forms ions. These ions carry electric charge between the electrodes (black) dipped into the solution in the beaker. A current of 0.14 amps is flowing, enough to power the light bulb. Connecting wires form the circuit that includes the power sockets behind the apparatus. Solid sodium chloride does not conduct electricity.
