Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a single pollen grain of Eragrostis spinosa, one of the allergens which can cause hay fever (pollenosis) in susceptible individuals. Hay fever is the most common of all allergic conditions, occuring when certain pollens or mould spores are inhaled. Persons suffering from hay fever produce a sensitising antibody, immunoglobulin E (IgE), which is present on the surface of cells in the nose & eyes. The encounter of IgE with an allergen releases histamines, which provoke swelling & inflammation of the nose, eyes and throat. Magnification: x6400 at 6x7 cm size.
