Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a single pollen grain of Wormwood, Artemisia sp. , one allergenic cause of hay fever (pollenosis) in susceptible individuals. The most common allergenic condition, hay fever occurs when certain pollens or mould spores are inhaled. Victims of hay fever produce a sensitising antibody, immunoglobulin E (IgE), present on the surface of cells in the nose & eyes. The encounter of IgE with an allergen causes the release of histamines, chemicals which provoke swelling & inflammation of the nose, eyes and throat. Magnification: x6000 at 6x7 cm size.
