Caption: Illustration of a pollen grain. Pollen are the minute male spores produced by seed plants, and serve a reproductive role. Containing the male gametes, a pollen grain consists of an outer wall (exine) which may be highly sculpted, as here. This sculpting may assist in wind, water or insect dispersal of the pollen, and is used by botanists to recognise the species of plant from which the pollen comes. Pores in the pollen wall help in water regulation and germination. The pollen is dispersed to female reproductive parts of the plant (pollination) where it grows (germinates) to fertilize the female egg. Magnification: unknown.
