Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph showing pollen grains, male sexual cells, of a rose plant. The pollen grain wall consists of a resistant outer layer, known as exine, which is characterised by the presence of several apertures and tiny projections. The pattern formed by the apertures and projections may be so distinctive that individual genera and even species can be recognised. The pores, apart from facilitating germination, play an important role in water regulation and in controlling compatibility sistems. Pollen grains contain concentrated mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and golgi apparatus. Magnification: x4000 at 35mm size.
