Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph of pollen grains of the ragweed Ambrosia sp. This daisy-like flower, found growing in bare and waste ground, produces pollen allergens which are a cause of hay fever (pollenosis) in allergic individuals. Hay fever is the commonest of all allergies, occurring when certain pollens or mould spores are inhaled. Sufferer's produce a sensitising antibody which is found on the surface of cells in the nose and eyes; this antibody reacts to the pollen allergen by causing inflammation of the linings of nose and throat, and watering of eyes.
