Caption: Pine pollen. Light micrograph of winged pollen grains of a pine tree, Pinus sp. Each pollen grain has two oval wing-like structures which enables it to float in air, as an adaptation for dispersal by the wind. Male pine cones positioned high in the tree emit this pollen which must reach female cones positioned in other trees, sometimes a great distance away. Magnification: x160 at 35mm size.
