Caption: Broom pollen. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of two broom pollen grains. The grooved and pitted pollen grains show the distinctive sculpted protein coat of a species of broom (family: Leguminosae). Pollen grains are produced by the male sex organs in flowers. In broom they are produced in sticky clusters that are carried inadvertently to the female sex organs by bees foraging for nectar. After being deposited on the female sex organ, the pollen grain germinates and fertilises a female egg. Magnification x960 at 6x6 cm size.
