Caption: Daisy pollen. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of a cluster of pollen grains from a Leucanthemum flower, a member of the daisy family. The sculpted protein coat of this pollen is covered with spikes that help the grains stick to insects, which pollinate the flowers. Pollen is the main cause of seasonal hay fever (allergic rhinitis) in humans, where highly specialised proteins on the pollen grain coat trigger an allergic reaction. Magnification x600 at 35mm size.
