Caption: False-colour infrared image of part of the Horsehead Nebula (NGC 2024), showing numerous bright newly-formed stars. Optical photographs of the same region appear almost completely empty, because the light from these young stars is absorbed by the opaque dust which permeates the nebula. Infrared radiation, however, penetrates the dust, revealing the stars within. The Horsehead Nebula is a dark nebula which lies over 1000 light years away in the constellation of Orion.
