Caption: Forsythia pollen. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from Forsythia sp. flowers. These beautifully sculpted pollen grains have a lace-like surface appearance and a three- lobed structure. Every species of flowering plant produces pollen with its own unique structure and shape. Pollen grains carry the male gametes of a plant, necessary to fertilize the female ovules to create seeds. Forsythia sp. are deciduous shrubs that are popular to gardeners as spring-flowering plants.
