Caption: Jet from a young star. Visible light image of the Herbig-Haro object HH-47, a jet of gas about half a light year long, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. The gas was ejected by a young star hidden in a dust cloud near the left of the frame. The wavy nature of the jet suggests that it is perturbed by a second body, perhaps a binary companion to the new star. The white filamentary feature at left is gas illuminated by the new star. The mechanism of jet formation is unclear, but may be due to gas being heated as it falls toward the new star, then being ejected at speed along the star's rotational axis.
