Caption: Star birth. Optical image of the starburst region NGC 3603. This is a region of intense star formation activity, and includes the densest known concentration of young supermassive stars (centre). The region is surrounded by hydrogen gas clouds (pink). This image was made using the 8.2- metre Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
