Caption: Cold dust in the Eagle Nebula. Infrared image of a cold dust cloud (blue) surrounding a hot starbirth region (red) in the Eagle or M16 Nebula. The temperature of the dust is around -100 degrees Celsius. New stars are formed within this dust when gas in the nebula condenses under gravity. The cold dust cools the condensed gas sufficiently for nuclear fusion processes to occur, ensuring that new stars are born. Image taken by the European Space Agency's Infrared Space Observatory.
