Caption: Starbirth region N 180B, Hubble Space Telescope image. Hydrogen clouds (pink and orange) are set amid a background of oxygen gas (blue). This area contains some of the brightest known clusters of hot, young stars, which are ionizing the dust and gas, causing them to glow. Strong stellar winds from the young stars sweep the gas and dust into the patterns seen here. Pillars of colder dust (black) may be in the process of collapsing to form stars. This area is several hundred light years across. N 180B is in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), 170,000 light years from Earth in the constellations Mensa and Dorado. Image data obtained in 1998 by Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2.
