Caption: Germinating pollen grain. Light micrograph showing the germination of a pollen grain of the winter jasmine, Jasminium nudiflorum. Three pollen grains are seen. A pollen tube (long, thin) has grown out of the lower pollen grain. This tube grows down into one of the finger-like projections that form the female stigma of the flower (unseen). The tube penetrates the stigma and style, to reach the ovaries at the base of the style. The tube then conveys two male gametes, or sperm cells, which fertilize an ovule (egg) to produce a seed. Magnification: unknown.
