Caption: Pine pollen. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of pine tree (Pinus sp. ) pollen grains. Each pollen grain consists of an elliptical base with two air sacs, which are extensions of the pollen grain's wall. These sacs help the wind- dispersed pollen to float on air. The pollen is produced by male pine cones high in the tree, and may have to reach female cones a great distance away. Therefore wind-dispersed pollen is made in massive quantities. It is the main cause of seasonal hay fever (allergic rhinitis) in humans, where highly specialised proteins on the pollen grain coat trigger an allergic reaction. Magnification x120 at 35mm size.
