Caption: Cedar pollen. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain from a cedar tree, Cedrus sp. The pollen grain consists of two inflated air sacs, which are extensions of the pollen grain's wall. These help the wind- dispersed pollen to float on air. Wind-dispersed pollen is made in massive quantities to ensure fertilization. It is the main cause of seasonal hay fever (allergic rhinitis) in humans, where highly specialised proteins on the pollen grain coat trigger an allergic reaction. Magnification unknown.
