Caption: Spectrum of Arcturus. Visible light spectrum of the orange giant star Arcturus. The spectrum is created by allowing light exiting a telescope to pass though a prism, a technique called objective prism spectroscopy. Many dark absorption lines may be seen especially in the blue region. Spectra such as this help astronomers understand the elemental composition of stars and other objects. Arcturus (alpha Bootis) is a spectral class K star in the constellation Bootes, and the fourth- brightest star in the night sky.
