Caption: Globular cluster NGC 6356. Optical image of the globular star cluster NGC 6356 in the constellation Ophiuchus. Globular clusters are balls of hundreds of thousands of stars which are held together by mutual gravitational attraction. They contain some of the oldest stars known. They orbit the centre of our galaxy in a halo, and similar haloes have been seen around other galaxies. This cluster lies around 17,200 light years from Earth. Image made by the UH8K CCD camera on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
