Caption: Beehive star cluster (M44), optical image. This cluster is also known as Praesepe. It is an open cluster, a group of stars that all formed from the same cloud of gas and dust. In the case of the Beehive, which is some 400 million years old, the remnants of this cloud have long since dispersed. The Beehive cluster lies around 580 light years from Earth in the constellation Cancer.
