Caption: Ambrosia pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain (yellow) of the ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia. Each species of flowering plant has a unique pollen grain. Spines on the grains, as seen here, allow them to attach to insect pollinators. Pollen is one of the allergens that causes human hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Hay fever causes sneezing, watering eyes and a runny nose. Magnification unknown.
