Caption: Horse chestnut pollen grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from a flowering horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum). Each grain has three lobes, separated by deep furrows through which the pollen tube emerges at the time of germination. Pollen contains the male reproductive cells of the plant. When a grain lands on the female parts of the flower (the stigma, the tip of the style), a pollen tube descends through the female structures to the ovaries, where it fertilises an ovum, forming a seed.
