Caption: Optical image of Sirius (the bright star at centre left) also known as the Dog Star. Sirius is situated in the constellation of Canis Major. It is the brightest star in the sky and one of the nearest to the Earth at a distance of 8.7 light years. Sirius is a visual binary star and its companion Sirius B (not visible here) was the first white dwarf star to be discovered.
