Caption: Pollen grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two unidentified pollen grains. The sculptured outer walls (exines) of the grains play a role in their dispersal by wind, water or insects. Pollen grains contain the male gametes of the plant which fertilize the female egg (or ovule) to form the plant seed. Wind- dispersed pollen may cause allergies and hay fever. Magnification: x2600 at 6x7cm size.
