Caption: Star trails. Time-exposure photograph of trails of light formed by the planet Mars (bright, at centre) and the stars of the constellation of Leo over a natural rock arch. Star trails are made by the relative movement of heavenly objects through the night sky as the Earth rotates. The trails reveal the variety of colours and brightnesses of the stars in the sky. The star trails form concentric circles centred on one of the Earth's Celestial Poles (not seen here). The two Celestial Poles are a point in the sky directly above the South Pole in the southern hemisphere and the North Pole in the northern hemisphere. Photographed in Arizona, USA.
