Caption: Runaway star. Optical image of HD 77581, a so- called 'runaway star'. This star moves at about 80 kilometres per second through the gaseous inter- stellar medium, fast enough to create a pronounced bow shock front (magenta). HD 77581 is the visible companion of supernova remnant Vela X- 1. This image was made using the Max Planck Telescope at the La Silla Observatory, Chile.
