Caption: Rape pollen grain. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain from a flower of the oil seed rape plant (Brassica napus). It is seen on the petal of the flower. Pollen contains the male genetic information of a plant. Pollen is carried by insects, the wind or water to other plants, and some lands on the female parts of a flower. Here, it sends a pollen tube through to the ovaries, allowing a male cell to fertilise an egg (ovum) and form a seed. Magnification: x3300 at 6x6cm size.
