Caption: Pine pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Scot's pine (Pinus sylvestris) pollen grain. This pollen grain consists of a base with two air-filled, wing-like bladders, which are extensions of the pollen grain's wall. These 'wings' help the wind-dispersed pollen to float on air. The pollen is produced by male pine cones high in the tree, and may have to reach female cones a great distance away. Wind-dispersed pollen is made in massive quantities. Magnification: x1600 at 6x6cm size.
