Caption: Ash tree pollen grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from the ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior). These are wind- borne pollen grains, which carry the male reproductive cells. They are released in vast numbers in late spring, and some inevitably land on the female parts of the tree. The ash tree is a common deciduous tree found in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The wood is strong and flexible and much used in industry. The bark and leaves of this tree have been used for medicinal purposes. Magnification: x2800 at 6x7cm size.
