Caption: Extrasolar planet. Artwork of a hypothetical extrasolar planet surface at night. This planet orbits a star near the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. The night sky shows a dense pattern of new and old stars. At centre left of the horizon is the Pistol star, the brightest star in the galaxy, surrounded by a nebula (pink). At far left is the Arches star cluster (blue). It is not thought that life could evolve on planets in the galactic centre due high levels of radiation from nearby supernova explosions and from the stellar winds of young stars. A supermassive black hole at the galaxy centre also emits strong X-rays.
