Caption: Pollen grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from a sweet violet (Viola odorata) plant, on a stamen (green). There is great variation in the size, shape and surface texture of pollen. The outer wall is highly sculpted in many plants, which may assist in dispersal. The characteristic surface of a plant's pollen grains is used by botanists to recognise and classify species. Pollen is produced on the stamen of the plant and contains the male gametes, which fertilise the eggs or ovules, initiating formation of plant seeds. Magnification unknown.
