Caption: Pollination. Macrophotograph of orchid pollinia (yellow, grey) on the head of a bee, Apis sp. These adhered to the bee's head as it flew from flower to flower. It will now unintentionally pollinate other orchids with the pollen in the pollinia. Pollinia are clusters of pollen grains produced by the male reproductive parts (anthers) in orchid flowers. The pollen contains the male gametes which will fertilise the female part of an orchid, producing a seed. These pollinia are from the tongue orchid (Serapias vomeracea orientalis). Photographed in Crete, Greece. Magnification: x3.1 at 35mm size.
