Caption: GRB 041227 gamma ray burst. Artwork of the emission of X-rays and gamma rays on 27 December 2004 during gamma ray burst (GRB) 041227. This was the strongest emission of X-rays and gamma rays known at that time. The flash was detected by around fifteen satellites located around Earth and elsewhere in the solar system, including Integral, RHESSI, Swift, and Ulysses. GRBs are extremely high-energy events. The burst, a flash of radiation seen as two jets, may be as bright as the rest of the universe combined for a few seconds. They are thought to be extremely distant, up to 12 billion light years away. They may be the result of a neutron star being torn apart by a black hole.
