Caption: GRB 020813 gamma ray burst, X-ray image. Artwork (top) and Chandra X-ray data (bottom) of the gamma ray burst (GRB) 020813 which took place on 13 August 2002. The illustration shows the GRB resulting from the aftermath of a supernova, with the supernova remnant (SNR, red) expanding away after the explosion of a massive star. The X-ray data, observed over 21 hours, showed evidence that the high-energy rays from the GRB jets (pointing at Earth) had passed through an SNR surrounding the origin of the GRB. This data supports the theory that GRBs occur when a black hole forms in the core that remains after a supernova occurs.
