Caption: Pollen release from the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The pollen (white) of this plant is produced by the male parts (catkins, brown) and must reach the female parts (not seen) which may be a considerable distance away. The pollen is produced in massive quantities. Each grain possesses two wing-like structures which aid its dispersal by local air currents. The Scots pine flowers between April and June.
